Homestead Philosophy

What is a Homestead?

"Most of us consider the home to be a place where we have a roof over our head, lights, heat, creature comforts. We go to the grocery store to buy our food, we cut our grass with gasoline purchased at the gas station (or hire someone else to do it for us), we connect to public sewer and water, the utilities, etc. We decorate it the way we want it helping fulfill that emotional need within us ... not so bad, it keeps us safe, comfortable, and allows us to relax our minds.

A homestead on the other hand blends the environment outside our doors with our living environment inside them. We collect rain water to water our vegetable garden on dry days, we grow our food just outside the kitchen door, we have a few chickens, ducks, pigs, goats, etc to provide nutrients for the garden and ourselves. In other words we become self sufficient. We reduce as much as we can our dependence on fossil fuels, or food from across the country or overseas. We share resources with our neighbors, helping them and allowing them to help us.

A home is something we wrap around us, a homestead is how we give as much as we take from the resources our environment provides."
